From journalism to research: I left my job in online journalism in order to pursue a PhD at the Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society. In my doctoral thesis I focus on informal regulation of internet infrastructure. I did not fully turn away from journalism though: from 2013 to 2015 I worked as academic editor at the Internet Policy Review where I contributed to establishing a hybrid form of publication at the crossroads of journalism and academia. Now it is all about finishing my thesis.

Thoughts about Internet infrastructure

Publications & Appearances

How do networkers manufacture Internet connectivity? I have been pondering about this question for several years now. My research involved interviewing 50 network engineers, peering coordinators and observers from around the globe. At the RIPE Meeting in Dubai I presented some of my reflections.

For the majority of people in developed countries, the Internet is invisible most of the time. A socket in the wall, a cell site atop a building, a WiFi password written on a restaurant menu – only rarely are we reminded of the fact that Internet connectivity is not just there like a natural resource. It has become ambient. But for some people there is another side to it. This is a text about the networkers who make the Internet work.

There are many resources to turn to in order to learn about Internet peering. But when it comes to de-peering, networkers are mostly left with their gut feeling. This is an article about the Dos and Don'ts of dissolving peering relationships.

There is more. Head here to read all texts.
